Carnival is indeed Bacchanal. This was more than apparent as DancehallSoca.com was front and centre for the event that brought the bacchanal like no other, Bacchanal Wednesday. The Carnival Wednesday event put on by the world famous Club Zen consistently shines like a star in the Carnival fete Universe due to its energetic vibe, dependable fun factor and its always exciting cast of Bacchanalish entertainers.
This fete took place on the western peninsular of Chaguaramas. This cool, open-air, seaside venue was appropriate for the event that is known for bringing the heat just days before the Carnival parade. The 2010 edition Bacchanal Wednesday certainly did not disappoint as it showcased the Caribbean’s finest on one mega stage.
Upon entry the DancehallSoca team could hear the sweet voice of the Queen of Soca herself, Alison Hinds. Ms. Hinds and her band set the Soca pace as the night’s first performers and got the Bacchanal Wednesday audience all warmed up for the fete frenzy that would continue throughout the night.
The folks in both the general and VIP areas of the fete were ecstatic at the sight of Ms. Hind’s special guest, Reggae crooner Jah Cure. Cure carried the crowd through his repertoire of hits including the ballad “Longing For”. Alison Hinds joined Jah Cure to perform their much loved Carnival collaboration, the Soca remix to “Call on Me”.
Cure showed off his Caribbean versatility by proving to the T&T audience that he good not only sing Soca but he could dance to it as well.
Super Chutney-Soca Crossover band Karma took to the stage next and delivered an awesome performance which consisted of Chutney, Soca, Dancehall and even Pop and Techno hits. The Chutney Soca Monarch Ravi B along with band mates Nisha B and Gregory Ayuen gave the Bacchanal Wednesday crowd a true Club Zen experience, complete with a mixed genre set, confetti descending from the heavens and a guest appearance by Grenadian superstar Tallpree.
The evening’s entertainment was taken to a new level by the ultra-popular Kes The Band. Kes, although lacking the presence of vocalist Nadia Batson put on a great showing and delivered their monster hits such as “Melee”, “Right Dey”, “Stalker”, “Thunder” and “Heaven”. The Kes set did not only feature their exciting, athletic background dancers but also appearances by Soca stalwarts Explainer, David Rudder and Soca newbie Swappy and his “big girl” dancer.
Throughout the night the DJs kept the massive crowd in attendance in the Carnival spirit with a unique mix of 2010 Soca smashers intertwined with 2009’s hits and even old school classics. One enthused fan admitted that Bacchanal Wednesday was her first fete for the 2010 season and that she was looking forward to seeing the HD Family perform that night.
The highly publicized absence of Soca Diva Destra and Icon Machel Montano has been a topic of discussion for the entire Carnival season and many wondered if the HD band would be able to prevail without their leader. At Bacchanal Wednesday the band of the year did pull out all the stops to appease their fans’ concerns.
Commencing with long time band member Farmer Nappysinging his 2K10 song “I Pay For This”, and then later featuringPatrice Roberts, Zan and Umi Marcano, the HD family had the capacity crowd rocking to their past and present tunes such as “Rollin” and “Turn it Up”, “Out on The Road”, “Hold You Down” and “In Front of Meh”.
Bacchanal Wednesday 2010 was indeed well attended by Carnival fanatics from near and far. Our team got to interact with attendees who represented various parts of the globe including, Venezuela, Jamaica, Germany, Australia and even South Africa.
Besides gaining positive reviews from many attendees with regards to its influx of superb entertainment and lack of negative incidents, the fete was also well documented by several media houses and was also patronised by the likes of former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara and former Soca Warrior Dwight Yorke.
On behalf of DancehallSoca.com, our team extends congratulations to the Zen committee for a fantastic, fun filled experience and special thanks to Mr. Johnny Soong for granting us media access to the event.
