Is Sizwe C your stage name or real name?
It is my real name. My
father saw the play “Sizwe Bonzi is dead.”
He wanted to give me a powerful name. The play was about apartheid in Africa.
Where are you from?
I was born in Montreal, Canada. I moved to Miami when I was 8 years old.
That is interesting, where are your parents from?
My father is Trinidadian and my mother is Haitian.
What would you say you learned from your Dad about Trinidad?
I learned everything from him. My father is into Soca really deep. He used to be a DJ. He used to bring me with him at times to fetes. That is how I soak up everything.
Are you connected to your Haitian heritage as well?
Not as connected as I would like to be. I live in a house with a Trinidad man as the head. It is like my mother is from Trinidad. [Laughs] She makes the best Roti, hands down.
Why did you decide to be a Soca artist?
It is funny how I became an artist. I really wanted to make a song to be on stage. From the one song, I wanted to make more. From there I then focus on making an album.
Sizwe, you are one of the hardest working Caribbean artists out there. You pushed the single “wine on you” very well. How do you go about working the single you have to make sure it is heard?
I send my music to website like Toronto Lime, DancehallSoca, and Trini Jungle juice. I make the contact myself. I ask for them to profile me and continue to push the music. I also did a few remixes of the one song. This gives the song a refresh sound.
What would a DancehallSoca reader be surprised to learn about you?
I am a family man, I have two children. I am active in the United States army. I was in Kuwait the other day. I may be off to Korea soon.
Where will Sizwe C be in ten years?
I want to be big in the music.
What would you like to share with Soca artist who are trying to make it in the music business?
I am a Soca artist. Some artist may say that they are just an artist. I represent Soca to the fullest. I will always be a Soca artist.
What are you doing when not doing music?
I am playing music and Djing. I have a sound system called Soca Bashment. I host a radio show on Riddims 94.5 on Fri 7-9pm and Mon 12-2pm and my Dj's name is Dr. Esan the M.D.
What is your favorite Soca tune?
Lorraine by the Explainer. That song is the epitome of Soca. [Singing & laughing].
Thank you Sizwe!!
Thank DancehallSoca.com for your time. Respect!
