Jalena, what is enjoyable to you about doing music?

I always tell people, I never chose to do music, the music chose me.

I don’t even know why, I love music since I was small.

Who are some of the talented people you worked with?

The first song I ever recorded was produced by a guy in Trinidad by the name of Shell Shok.

He produced Alison Hinds “Roll it Gal.”

Slaughter Arts is my main producer, I do most of my work with him.

For our world wide audience, how would you best describe the music culture in the British Virgin Islands?

The Rhythm is what drives BVI music, The Iron.

There is some real good talent coming out of the Virgin Islands right now.

Would you say there is some difference in Soca music from BVI versus Trinidad?

My music tends to have the Trinidad feel to it.

 There are some differences.

Do you write your music?

I write 90% of my music

Outside of music, what would you want the people to know about you?

I was born and raised in the Virgin Island.  School is not for me.

I tried, but it is not for me.  Even though, I did not have a choice.

My mother wanted me to continue school.

What are some of the new tunes you are working on?

I recently recorded a new song with Problem Child.

I also want to focus on doing more Zouk.

What kind of growth do you hope to see in the music overall?

In Germany and Japan they love Soca.  Thanks to Technology.

Internet is a beautiful thing, let me tell you.

I can do work with people all over the world. It is growing and getting bigger.

What do you think the industry need to do in order to solidify its growth in the world?

Marketing, a lot of artists do not know how to market their music properly.

The artist also need to do things professionally.

Songs should be mixed properly and artist should put a little more into their work.

Where do you see yourself 10 yrs from now?

This might sound a bit like I am pushing it.

I do see myself being famous around the world.  Japan, Africa, wherever.

I am going after my dreams.  I get rejected almost everyday and I continue being focused on making it.

I also want to be known as a songwriter and not just a performer.

We will remind you years later when you are a big artist about this statement! [laughs]

I have no doubt in mind I will make it.

Are you working on a full length album?

Yes, I am working on my home studio.

As soon as I get one more piece of equipment, I will be recording in the comfort of my home.

Which Country is your favorite to play Mas?

That is a tough question.  You know they say there is no place like home.

Tortola and I love Vincy Mas.  I also like Trinidad Carnival.  I just came back from Trinidad.

What is your favorite dish?  You know us Caribbean people, we love to eat!

Yeah! [Laughing]  My mother tells me I am going to eat her out of house and home.

Some people might find it gross but I love pig tail.

Oh gosh!

It is my absolutely favorite. Especially, when it is in pea soup.

I am just curious, are you finding it easier as a Soca artist who happens to be a woman?

Being a woman, there are setbacks but as you know sex sells.

Some promoters want you to be with them in order to be on their shows.

Some people may not believe it.  It happens, I experienced it before.

I have to quickly tell them it is not happening here. [Laughs]

Who are you listening to?

 Edwin Yearwood and Claudette Peters

All the gentlemen want to know if Jalena is single.

Yes! single and not looking. [Laughs]

What advice do you have for new artist?

Technology, Technology, technology!  Use the internet to put your music out there.

I would not be talking to Orlando from DancehallSoca [laughs] without the internet.

Is there other artist out there you would love to collaborate with?

Jah Cure, hopefully sometime in the future. That would be a great thing.

What would a performance by Jalena be like?

Like I said earlier, sex sells. [Laughs]  I like to talk a lot of nonsense when I am on stage.

I think I do that because when I am nervous I talk a lot.

Thank you Jalena for taking the time out of your busy schedule while fêting all over the place. [Laughs]

Thank you, DancehallSoca.com for putting up with me.

Oh my goodness, I know we were supposed to do this before.

 Thank you for the opportunity.
