THE GLOBAL CHARTS & US

Dancehallsoca.comPUBLICATION

Ø     For music junkies like myself it seems now more that ever before that the good old saying Music is Universal & Music has no boundaries actual holds water. There’s a lot to be said about how the global music charts namely the World Charts,Billboard Top 100,US Top 10, UK Top 10 and everything in between has evolved over the years of their inception but what is more intriguing is the fact that us Jamaican’s, us Bajan’s, us Trini’s and us Caribbean people have stamp the many genres of our territory over the world making fans and patriot islanders proud. Yea mi proud a mi Artist and Producers them Big Up.There’s a good feeling to be enjoyed from knowing of all the Musician’s and Artists in the world some one like JUNIOR GONG from Jamaica, Kevin Lyttle from St. Vincent and RIHANNA from Barbados can dominate charts that fashion the who’s who of Pop Music. Pop-ular Music is regarded as the premium genre, it is where most artists set their sites and with associated charts can gauge their relevance and dominance in music on the largest scale possible. This scale weights all the big fishes, no pun intended.

Ø     One of the most credible and widely followed publications BillboardMagazine has for years researched, tallied, statistically judged and printed the hottest and most sough after talents as viewed by us the decisive public, keeping in mind that charts are primarily quoted by radio spins and album sales. To bring perspective on the significance of our entertainment culture in Jamaica & fellow Caribbean states lets examine the current world charts.* At # 1Rihanna repped her tiny Barbados Island with her undeniably flawless Umbrella single. This ahead of superstars like Akon, Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stephanie, 50 Cent, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse all of whom are viable challenger for the top honors. Also holding a position in the world charts top 10 is Jamaica born Sean Kingston at # 4 with his catchy cheerful single Beautiful Girls / Suicidal. The Dominican Republic raised Kat DeLuna club single Whine up featuring Elephant Man is also very much in the top 50. Other hardworking artists like Rupee, Machel Mantano and the Come Around herbalist Collie Buddz have all placed on a Billboard Chart. Lets not forget two of Jamaica’s most successful entertainers, both has held # 1 positions on major pop chart and both are set to release albums in the coming months. Sean Paul the Dutty Cup DJ and Mr. Bombastic himself Shaggy with platinum selling & award winning credits can be assured that poll positions & ranking await them from the very first single drops. All this Status Quo from a tiny group of islands barely visible on the globe.

Ø     Our past definitely mirrors the present. It was back in the 80’s and 90’s days of BobMarley, Shabba Ranks and Third World that Dancehall & Reggae cemented places on international charts. Despite the many challenges our cultures has faced it is important to point out that the torch has never fell, it has only been passed on over the years to the brightest star at that period in time. We no longer think one dimensional and say Jamaica’s success but we support any and all regional music. Rihanna embodies us and when she’s dominated the charts for weeks at a time it directly impact each and every Caribbean island.

Ø     I’m proud of all our entertainers those on and off the charts because they all had one common goal, to get on these charts. They say the world Revolves but when it comes to music and the Pop genre the world has actually Evolved and will continue to do so for eternity, I’m however hoping that as it does more Caribbean stars can make it big. The world is as friendly as you make it so word to the Wise and not so Wise, when attempting to make a world record try and incorporate as much authenticity as possible, the secret to a POP Hit Single is to be different from the rest inSound, Style and Look something we dancehall singing, carnival wining islanders seem to naturally exhume. * World Charts listing as at publication.
